Jump for charity

Jumping for charity is a great way to raise money for a worthy cause. We have an arrangement with a small number of locally based charitable organisations. They have agreed to pay the jump costs from the sponsorship money, provided a certain minimum amount is raised.

West Suffolk Voluntary Association for the Blind

Established as a charity in 1936, the West Suffolk Voluntary Association for the Blind promotes the welfare of visually impaired people living in the region.

To combat the isolation despair and poverty caused by blindness we deliver a range of services tailored to the needs of our members, the majority of whom are elderly and living alone. We gear our strategy to improving the quality of life for those with sight problems by enabling them to maintain their independence for as long as possible. In turn, this means members can retain their dignity and self-respect.

Funded in the main by grant giving bodies, the Association seeks support for its work from local and national sources.

St Helena Hospice Colchester

St Helena Hospice provides specialist palliative care services, with no charge to patients and their families, for people living in North Essex who have progressive, life threatening illness. The emphasis for this wonderful charity is about quality of life and services include community and day services, the in-patient unit, Macmillan nurses, medical services, family support, art therapy, spiritual support, physiotherapy and occupational therapy as well as complementary therapies such as acupuncture, massage and Shiatsu. In addition, the education centre at St Helena prepares, updates and educates hundreds of health and social care workers to carry out this vital role both now and in the future.

The hospice was established in 1985 to meet the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people with non-curable illness and to support relatives and friends and those professionally concerned in their care.

St Nicholas' Hospice Bury St Edmunds

St Nicholas' Hospice was founded in 1984 with one nurse being employed to work in the local community. Moving to new purpose-built premises at the rear of the West Suffolk Hospital in 1993, it now provides a comprehensive range of palliative care services to the communities from which it arose.

St Nicholas' Hospice serves a population of 250,000 in West Suffolk and Thetford. A predominantly rural area, it covers the expanding towns of Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Sudbury, Haverhill, Mildenhall and Thetford.

As a registered charity, it meets the needs of the people with active progressive disease, where life expectancy is uncertain and for whom the focus of care is the quality of life. Its services extend to the needs of partners, families and other carers before and after a patient's death.

St Nicholas' Hospice provides palliative care for patients and their families who are living with terminal illnesses like cancer. This care can be provided to the end of life, in the Hospice, in local hospitals and at home. This is entirely free to all who need our help. We can only do this with the generous support of our local communities.

There are well over a quarter of a million volunteers on the register and the Trust receives over 6,000 requests each year from people who need blood stem transplants to save their lives [ more... ]

West Suffolk Headway  West Suffolk Headway

Situated in Bury St Edmunds we provide a rehabilitation/activity centre and community based support for the people with Acquired Brain Injury and their carers. We have been operating since the mid 80s and are affiliated to the National Head Injuries Association based in Nottingham. West Suffolk Headway is YOUR local centre from over 100 Headway groups and branches in the UK.

Headway House is located on the Hardwick Industrial Estate, near the town centre. The day centre is devoted to providing care and relearning opportunities for people with Acquired Brain Injuries. We provide a friendly environment which is vital for effective therapy and overcomes the isolation experienced by many head-injured people.

People who attend our rehabilitation/day centre have suffered a traumatic brain injury through a variety of different reasons. The most common are accidents, brain tumours, strokes and encephalitis. In 2003, there was on average 285 attendances per month by people at West Suffolk Headway.

A "whole person" approach is followed, aiming to meet carefully considered individual needs and to maximise stimulation within a relaxed atmosphere.

West Suffolk Headway's aims are:

  • To provide therapeutic services and a supportive social network.
  • To promote local awareness and understanding of head injury.
